Campfire Songs

Here are a collection of campfire songs that I collected from my mom, aunts, sister-in-laws, and from Girls Camp.  Hope you enjoy them!

(PS There are a ton of them so be sure to click on the "read more" link to view the entire post)

The Animal Fair
I went to the animal fair
The birds and the beasts were there
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair.
The monkey bumped the skunk
And sat on the elephant’s trunk
The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees
And that was the end of the monk, the monk
And that was the end of the monk!

The Ants Go Marching
The ants go marching one by one hurrah, hurrah,
The ants go marching one by one hurrah, hurrah,
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stopped to suck his thumb,
And they all go marching
Down to the ground, to the earth.
Boom, boom, boom, boom.

Two by two - to tie his shoe
Three by three - to scratch his knee
Four by four - to shut the door
Five by five - to dance and jive
Six by six - to pick up sticks
Seven by seven - to look to heaven
Eight by eight - to shut the gate
Nine by nine - to tell the time
Ten by ten – to say the end!

Are You Sleeping
Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Brother John, Brother John?
Morning bells are ringing;
Morning bells are ringing.
Ding ding dong, ding ding dong!

An Austrian Went Yodeling
Oh, an Austrian went yodeling on the mountain so high.
When along came a coo coo bird interrupting his cry
Ho-li-ah ki-ki-ah, ho-li- ah, coo, coo, coo coo
Ho-li-ah-ki-ki-ah, ho-li-ah coo, coo coo coo
Ho-li-ah-ki-ki-ah, ho-li-ah coo, coo coo coo
 Ho-li-ah-ki-ki-ah, Oh!

Barges
Out of my window, looking through the night
I can see the barges flickering light.
Silently flows the water to the sea
And the barges do go silently.

Chorus:
Barges, I would like to go with you
I would like to sail the ocean blue.
Barges, have you treasures in your hold?
Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Out of the window, looking through the night
I can see the barges flickering light.
Starboard shines green and port is glowing red
I can see the barges far ahead.
(Chorus)

Bazooka Bubble Gum
My mom gave me a penny
She said me to go to Denny’s
But I didn't go to Denny’s.
Instead I bought some bubble gum,
Bazooka zooka bubble gum,
Bazooka zooka bubble gum..

My mom gave me a nickle...
She said to buy a pickle...etc.

My mom gave me a dime
She said to buy a lime...etc.

My mom gave me a quata'
She said to buy some wata'...etc.

My mom gave me a dollar
She said to buy a collar...etc.

Last verse:
My mom gave me a five
She said to stay alive
But I didn't stay alive.
Instead I choked on bubble gum,
Bazooka zooka bubble gum,
Bazooka zooka bubble gum.

Be Kind to Your Web Footed Friends
Be kind to your web-footed friends
For a duck may be somebody's brother.
Ducks are the demons of the swamp
Where the weather is dark and damp.
Now you may think that this is the end -
Well it is!

The Bear Went Over the Mountain
The bear went over the mountain
The bear went over the mountain

The bear went over the mountain
To see what he could see
The other side of the mountain
The other side of the mountain
The other side of the mountain
Was all that he could see
Was all that he could see
Was all that he could see
The other side of the mountain
Was all that he could see.

Bill Grogan’s Goat
Bill Grogan’s goat, was feeling fine,
Ate three red shirts, from off the line.
Bill took a stick, gave him a whack,
And tied him to, the railroad track.
The whistle blew, the train drew nigh,
Bill Grogan’s goat, was doomed to die,
He gave three groans, of mortal pain,
Coughed up those shirts, and flagged the train.

The Bear Song (a repeating song)
The other day (the other day)
I saw a bear (I saw a bear)
A great big bear (a great big bear)
A way up there (a way up there)
Everyone:
The other day I saw a bear
A great big bear a way up there
(use this same pattern in rest of song)

I looked at him…          He looked at me…
I sized up him…            He sized up me…

He says to me… Why don't you run..
I see you ain't…            Got any gun…

And so I ran…               Away from there…
But right behind…        Me was that bear…

Ahead of me…              There was a tree…
A great big tree…         Oh, Glory Be!

The lowest branch…     Was ten feet up…
I'd have to trust…        My luck to jump…

And so I jumped…         Into the air…
But I missed that branch… A way up there

Now don't you fret…    Now don't you frown…
'Cause I caught that branch…   On the way back down

That's all there is…      There ain't no more….
Unless I meet….            That bear once more….

Boom Boom

down south where bananas grow,
An ant stepped on an elephant's toe,

Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy,
Giddy and foolish the whole day through,

Sat on a curbstone shooting dice,
The horse he slipped and fell on the flea,

Hot Time In the Old Town Tonight

How Great Thou Art
O Lord my God!
When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Chorus:

How great Thou art!   How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art!   How great Thou art!

When through the woods
And forest  glades I wander,
I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandure
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin;
(Chorus)

When Christ shall come,
With shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim,
"My God, how great Thou art!"

From caramel corn and peanut chews,
and corn-dogs on a stick,...

And ice cream, soda, and chocolate bars,
And cotton candy, pink and blue;

I don't want to throw up, 'cause, "golly", if I do,

I’ve got the vision of an automobile.
Don’t have to worry where I’ll get my next meal.

Every dog’s got to have his say.
So I’ve had mine, and I’m ready to say,
Everything’s going my way.

My clothes are tailor made and my shoes are patent leather.
All I have to do is put myself together.
Take a look at me and buddy, buddy, buddy,
Everything’s going my way, all righty.                 Chorus:

Little Canoe
Just a boy and a girl in a little canoe
With the moon shining all around
And as he dips his paddle in

So what you gonna do in a little canoe

Boy paddlin’ all around!
Get out and swim!

All these wonderful things.

Boom de yada, boom

Paddled through the streams.
Gazed at the sunset
Shared our fondest dreams.
(Chorus)

A life of sharing
Learning how to give.
Friendships will last
As long as we shall live
(Chorus)

Make New Friends (round)
Make new friends, but keep the old
One is silver, and the other's gold.

My supper lies in a commotion.
Won't somebody bring me a pail?

Please bring, please bring,

Please bring,please bring,

Oh, Susanna
I come from Alabama,
With my banjo on my knee;
I'm goin' to Louisiana,
My true love for to see.
It rained all night the day I left,
The weather it was dry;
The sun so hot I froze to death;
Susanna, don't you cry.

Chorus:
Oh, Susanna, oh, don't you cry for me;
I've come from Alabama,
With my banjo on my knee.
Oh, Susanna, oh, don't you cry for me;

With my banjo on my knee.

On Top Of Spaghetti
On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table, and onto the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden, and under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.
The mush was as tasty as tasty could be,
And early next summer; It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered with beautiful moss,
It grew lovely meatballs, and tomato sauce.
So if you eat spaghetti, all covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatballs,
And don't ever sneeze.

Pink Pajamas (Tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic)
I wear my pink pajamas in the summer when it's hot.
I wear my flannel nighties in the winter when it's not.
And sometimes in the springtime,
And sometimes in the fall,
I jump between the sheets with nothing on at all.

CHORUS:
Glory, glory, Hallelujah;   Glory, glory, what's it to ya.
Balmy breezes blowing through ya,
With nothing on at all.  With nothing on at all!

Ravioli (Tune: Alouette)

Leader: On my chin?
All: On your chin. Oh-h-h-h-h
Ravioli, I like ravioli.
Ravioli, it's the best for me.

Rickabamboo (a repeating song)
The princess Pat
Lived in a tree.
She sailed across
The Seven Seas.
She sailed across
The channel too
And took with her
A RICKABAMBOO!
A Rickabamboo.
Now what is that?
It’s something made
For the princess Pat.
It’s red and gold
And purple too,
That’s why it’s called
A Rickabamboo!
Now captain Dan,
And his loyal crew,
They sailed across
The channel too.
But their ship sank
And yours will too
Unless you take
A Rickabamboo!

Sippin’ Cider (a repeating song)
The cutest boy
I ever saw
Was sippin ci-
der through a straw,
I asked him if
He'd show me how
To sip that ci-
der through a straw.
First cheek to cheek
Then jaw to jaw
We sipped that ci-
der through that straw,
Then all at once
The straw did slip,
And we were sipping lip to lip.
That's how I got
My mother -in- law,
And 49 kids that call me ma.
The moral of,
this little joke
Don't sip ciderSip Diet Coke!

“Tell Me Why”
Tell me why the stars do shine.
Tell me why the ivy twines.
Tell me why your eyes are so blue,
And I will tell you just why I love you.

Because God made the stars to shine
Because God made the ivy twine
Because God made your eyes so blue
Because God made you, that’s why I love you.

I really think that God above
Created you for me to love.
He picked you out from all the rest,
Because He knew that I’d love you the best.

This Land is Your Land
As I went walking, that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below that golden valley.
This land was made for you and me.
This land is your land, this land is my land.
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters.
This was made for your and me.
I saw a sign that said "No Trespassing."
And on the other side, that sign said nothing.
And all around me a voice was calling
"That sign was made for you and me."
This land is your land, this land is my land.
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters.
This was made for your and me.

Tra La La Boom
Tra la la boom dee-ay
There was no school today.
Our teacher passed away,
She died of tooth decay!
We threw her in the bay,
She scared the fish away!
And when we pulled her out,
She smelled like sauerkraut!

“Wadda Lee Otcha”

All you gotta do is doodle lee do it.
I like the rest, but the part I like best
Is doodle lee, doodle lee doo.

Weenie Man

He owns a hot dog stand.
He sells most anything from hot dogs and down.
Someday I'll change his life.
I'll be his weenie wife.
Oh, how I love that weenie man.

Worms
Nobody likes me,
Everybody hates me!
I’m gonna eat some worms.

Chorus (Repeat after each verse)
Big, fat juicy ones
Short, slim slimey ones,
Itsy, bitsy, fuzzy, wuzzy worms.

First you get a bucket,
Then you get a shovel,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
Next you pull the heads off,
Then you suck the guts out.
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
(Chorus)

Down goes the first one,
Down goes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
Up comes the first one,
Up comes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
(Chorus)

Everybody likes me,
Nobody hates me!
Why did I eat those worms?
(Chorus)

Chop up their heads and
Squeeze out their juice,
And throw their tails away.
Nobody knows how I survive
On worms three times a day!

White Coral Bells
White coral bells
Upon a slender stalk
Lilies of the valley
Deck my garden walk
Oh, how I wish
That I could
Hear them ring.
That will happen only
When the fairies sing.

Chorus:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away

The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried

He sure could quote a lot of poetry
But he'd much rather tell her
What he learned in his speller
When they both attended PS thirty-three....
