Modesty - When and why did it start?

When I served with the Young Women we had a discussion about modesty. Here is the topic I covered - When and why did this “modesty thing” start?

* Back in the olden days...
Since the time of Adam and Eve, the Lord has asked His children to cover their bodies. Until Eve was tempted by Satan in the Garden of Eden, she and Adam did not know they were naked. After eating of the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve’s eyes were opened and they became aware of their nakedness. At this time powerful appetites and desires were also unleashed. Adam and Eve tried to cover their most sacred parts with aprons of fig leaves. However, the Lord’s standards for modesty are greater, and He gave them coats of skins to cover themselves – even though at that time they were alone in the world. (See Moses 4:13 & 4:27)
From the first to the last, then clothing is more than a superficial matter. Clothes were provided by God to shield and protect us against not only the harsh elements of nature but also the temptations of our fallen natures, which the adversary seeks to exploit. That means that clothing can protect us physically and spiritually. Clothing allows us to express our individuality and to develop one of the most gracious of all virtues – modesty.
