Primary Talk - The Family: A Proclamation to the World teaches the importance of marriage

Here is a talk that my 10 year old gave on Sunday. He wrote a lot of the talk.

In the Family Proclamation it states that “…Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children.”
A family begins when a man and woman are married. Marriage between man and woman is essential to Heavenly Father’s eternal plan.

"Husband and wife have a responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children."

"Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ."

"Successful marriages can be built on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities."

FAITH – I have faith that families can be together forever because of the sealing ordinances in the temple. We can build our family’s faith by attending church and studying the scriptures.

PRAYER – Our family is stronger when we pray together every day because we thank Heavenly Father for our blessings and recognize how many we have. We also can receive help and guidance as we pray. We have family prayer every morning and night and I know my parents pray together too.

REPENTANCE – Everyone makes mistakes. We are able to repent for them and be forgiven.

FORGIVENESS – Sometimes people are unkind to each other. We can forgive each other and move on.

RESPECT – It is important to have respect so that we have happiness in our home and not rudeness. We need to listen to our parents and respect them. Our parents also need to respect each other.

LOVE- Our homes need to be a loving place so that everyone can feel happy and feel like they are safe and belong.

COMPASSION- When one family member has a problem we can all support each other so that the burden seems lighter.

WORK- I don’t like this part very much, but it builds character and helps you be prepared to be a grown up. My mom and dad say to work first and then play.

WHOLESOME RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES- This means having fun with your family. We like having family night together each week. We also like doing trips together, playing sports and playing games.

In a marriage, each person has a specific role.

Fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the money and protection for their families.

Mothers are primarily responsible for taking care of the children.

Fathers and mothers are supposed to help one another as equal partners. Sometimes families need to make changes to their responsibilities if necessary.

I would like to bear my testimony that I know families can be together forever and that the temple makes that possible. I know that if you do the things in the proclamation we have a better chance of being happy in our families. I am grateful for my Savior and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
