Christmas Hersheys Candy Bar Wrappers

I consider myself a pretty thoughtful person but usually I feel overwhelmed during the holidays so my thoughtfulness doesn't always end up matching my actions... well at least not without a lot of sleep deprivation and stress.  I'm sure many people can relate.

So this year I decided that I would get on top of the teacher gifts earlier than in years past.  That means not staying up late the night before the last day of school to get them all put together.

My kids switch classes so that means I have 18 teacher gifts to make.  Plus my cute hubby decided he wanted me to make them for his coworkers so that added another dozen or so.

I have compassion on those who are in the same boat as I am so I decided to share my super easy gift with others to spread the Christmas joy and ease some stress.  The bars listed above have my personalized wrappers but I created a generic one for others to use (after receiving requests from several of my friends around the country).

Here's how to do it.

Talk - Christ's Birth, Life, Example and Purpose

This is a talk that my friend gave at church on the Sunday before Christmas.  I am thankful that she agreed to let me post it on my blog.

Like most of you, I love the Christmas season. It gives me the chance to reflect on the birth of Christ, his ministry here on Earth, and the atoning sacrifice he made for all of us.

Some of the most beautiful scriptures written relate to the birth of Christ.

Christmas Videos for Families

I know it is a little early, but I wanted to share these great Christmas videos.  They aren't very long and are wonderful reminders about the true meaning of Christmas.

"Let It Go" Christmas Song (to the tune of "Let It Snow")

This little song came into my mind tonight when I was starting to stress out about all the Christmas stuff (and normal every day stuff) I have to do.  I tell ya, it is hard to work full-time and be a mom/wife/friend/daughter/sister/church volunteer/school volunteer/neighbor, etc.  There are only so many hours in a day and I feel like to find more time I need to steal from my sleeping hours.

With the shortage of time, it probably doesn't help that I decided to compose this little poem tonight.  But it made me happy, and only took me 10 minutes to write it, so I indulged.

At any rate, here's my little poem.  If you can relate, enjoy!

Christmas SOCKING

My friend Stephanie and I created this fun Christmas service activity.  It is sort of like "boo-ing" at Halloween, but you use a stocking.

I wanted to make this simple and easy so I made this cute handout, laminated it, and attached it permanently to the stocking and calling it good. This way no one has to be burdened with making copies like you do with boo-ing. You can buy stockings from the dollar store and put any simple treat inside.

Since I am starting this up in my neighborhood, we are using four stockings with poems instead of just one.  That way the tradition will spread more quickly.

Click HERE to go to GoogleDocs and get this shorter version of the poem in color as a PDF file.

Click HERE to get this longer version of the poem in color as a PDF.

Click HERE to get a PDF file of this black and white version on Google Drive.

NOTE: Due to the popularity of this initial post, I created a few more versions of this "Christmas Socking" poem.  Enjoy!  By the way, there is a GoogleDrive link for each of the poems so that you can get PDF files to print.  If that doesn't work for you or if you want a PowerPoint version to edit, you can email me at pamthemom@gmail.com and tell me what you'd like me to send to you.  I wrote the poems so feel free to copy them without feeling guilty :)

For the OFFICE - Click HERE to get a PDF

For teachers to do at school (teachers and staff participating, not kids) - Note, I changed the turn-around time to 24 hours and also made it end the last day before holiday break.  Click HERE to get the PDF file.

For a friend (who isn't necessarily a neighbor).  Click HERE to get the PDF.

I received an email from a blog reader who requested a version that could be used for her friends who celebrate holidays other than Christmas.  The whole "stocking" theme can't really be eliminated but I substituted out the word Christmas for Holidays instead so she could share the fun with friends of different religious backgrounds.  Click HERE to get a PDF.

Some blog readers requested that I create a sign for people to put up after they've been "socked" so here ya go!

Click HERE to get a PDF file of these "We've Been Socked" signs (2 per page) on Google Drive.

Click HERE to get the PDF file of "I've Been Socked" signs (2 per page) on Google Drive.  These might work better for an office or school setting.

Happy socking!  Spread the tradition!

Christmas Dinner for Church

We had the teenagers serve dinner to all the families.  We served the food "family style" at the tables. This was fun because the families could stay seated and not wait in a buffet line and also because the teenagers could all hang out together.  Let's face it, teens would rather eat with their friends than their families at this age anyway!

I was in charge of coordinated all the teenagers and getting the food to the tables.  I had this sign hanging in the wall by the kitchen so that the kids would know what to serve and in what order.  We had an "In" door and an "Out" door for kids to come in and grab the food to bring into the cultural hall/gym area.

Our menu was salad, rolls, pork chops, green beans, and baked potatoes.  The teenagers ate dinner in another room after they served all the families.  It was a big, fun mess in their room.

After dinner, and before dessert, we gave each table a sugar cookie kit so that they could decorate their own cookies for fun.  We had homemade sugar cookies, sprinkles, icing, etc.  Dessert was served last.  It was some sort of rich mousse type thing.  I didn't really have time to eat but I heard everything was yummy.

Here's the chart I made so that we'd know which teenager was in charge of which table.  Each person had one table to be responsible for.  They also had name tags on that listed their table number.  Tables were also numbered.  For centerpieces we had gingerbread cookie bouquets and each vase had a cute paper with a number on it. (if you enlarge the pictures of the tables you can see in more detail)  We also had a movie presentation showing lots of pictures of people doing service throughout the year.  We didn't have a screen that was big enough so we just showed it on the wall at the back of the stage.  Also, the pom pom snowflakes that were hanging from the ceiling were from Martha Stewart's website and made from tissue paper.

After the ward dinner, all the teenagers came over to my house for an "after party."  They had a blast playing basketball, ping pong, watching Elf, having snacks, and just hanging out.  It was an exhausting and fun night for all.

Paper Plate Baskets

Click HERE to learn how to make these DARLING baskets out of paper plates.

They would be great to use for parties, birthdays, weddings, Easter, Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween, picnics, Teacher Appreciation, etc.

When I read the directions for how to make the baskets, I didn't know what "washi tape" was.  So I did a little research (click HERE for info).  I'm tempted to buy some and do something crafty with it.  The frugal side of me may try using staples and ribbon before I invest in buying yet another crafting supply though!

I will post pictures when I make my own baskets.

Christmas Goodies - The Dilemma

We have a dilemma in our house.  I am feeling a bit like the Little Red Hen. (click HERE if you're not familiar with the story)  If you can't tell, I may have overworked myself recently and am feeling frustrated.  Here's the scoop.

Yesterday I spent most of the day baking cookies and treats for neighbor and friend gifts.  (Did I mention we have a LOT of neighbors and friends?)  Usually I enjoy baking, but not so much during the month of December when I am so short on time and my to do list is so big.  (Did I mention that my Christmas gifts are not wrapped and I still have some shopping to do?  Feeling the Christmas crunch pressure)  Of course my kids were too busy playing with friends to help make the cookies.  And the hubby was working at home all day but somehow did find time to go to Costco to buy a huge TV that he's been dreaming about... (Yes, I know I am sounding a little whiny and poor-me-ish)

We've been receiving several plates of goodies, homemade salsa, clever gifts, etc. every night for the last two weeks.  Every time the doorbell rings, my kids run to the door to get the goodies and they usually devour them before the night is through.

Here's where "Angry Baking Mama" gets grouchy.  Last night, I asked my husband and children to DELIVER the goodies that I put together.  Keep in mind that I shopped for the ingredients, I put the ingredients together, I baked the cookies, I put the plates together and I made the cute tags, etc.  They all started murmuring and complaining about having to deliver the goodies.

So I gave an ultimatum... I said, "Whoever makes and/or delivers the Christmas goodies to others gets to eat the ones that we receive.  You don't help GIVE, you don't RECEIVE!"

Christmas Gift Ideas for Neighbors

I loved these fun ideas I read about HERE (I cut and pasted them below for you).

One of the most magical parts of Christmas is the opportunity to give. We’ve helped make gift-giving simple and affordable this season by sharing our top Christmas neighbor gift ideas. Gather your family, vote on your favorites, and make some magical Christmas memories together.

5190
That’s right, our #1 neighbor gift idea is No Gifts. As fun as it is to give and receive Christmas gifts from neighbors, we wanted our #1 idea to be one that truly encompasses the true meaning of the Christmas spirit.

This idea could take a little planning on your part, but the rewards could be the greatest.

Instead of giving neighbor Christmas gifts, agree as a neighborhood not to. Use all of the money that would have been spent on each other towards a charitable cause.

Here is an example of a possible invitation for a neighborhood caroling night:

“Instead of giving neighborhood gifts,

Together a family’s hearts we will lift.

Use that money to fill your shopping cart

With toys and food, a gift from the heart.

One family will start the caroling tradition

Singing while on a neighborhood mission.

We’ll arrive on your doorstep singing a song,

Grab your family and join in, you’ll come right along.

But before stepping out and starting to sing
Don’t forget your charitable donation to bring.

To the next door we’ll carol and add to our crowd

We’ll add and we’ll add ‘til we’re incredibly loud.

Finally we’ll stop for a neighborhood treat,

At the Cauffmans’ home we will mingle and greet.

Although our fingers and toes may be freezin’

We will capture the true spirit of this special season.

“Please join us as our neighborhood carols for a cause on December 15th. We will start caroling at 7 o’clock and pick up your family sometime shortly thereafter. We plan to finish at the Cauffmans’ home for treats around 8 o’clock. Thank you for being a part of something bigger this year as our neighborhood grants a special family’s Christmas wish. Think of the smiles…”

5193
At first glance, it is easy to look at a towel as a most ordinary object. Have you ever stopped to think that for thousands of years, the towel has been used for many wonderful purposes? For example, the mother who wipes the tears of a child to soothe an emotional or physical hurt, the physician who binds the wounds of a bleeding patient, or the woman in her home wiping her hands as she moves from task to task.

Perhaps the most significant use of the towel happened nearly two thousand years ago when our Savior, only hours before He hung on the cross, took an ordinary towel in His loving hands and dried the feet of His disciples. This simple, loving act personifies the selflessness and loving service we seek to give during our lives. It illustrates that an ordinary thing like a towel, in the right hands, and with a giving heart, can lighten another’s load. As with every action performed by the Savior on this earth, His act of service reminds us that simple day-to-day kindnesses are the Savior’s way to bless and comfort.

Tag idea: “This towel is given with love and with the hope you will do works of goodness with it as the Savior did so many years ago. May the absorbing spirit of the season blot our problems, soak up sorrows, wipe away difficulties, and may your holidays be shining and bright!’

5197
Doing the dishes for your neighbor? What could be a better gift than that? Deliver paper plates with a tag saying, “Don’t let your dishes pile up this busy holiday season. Let our family ‘do the dishes’ this week!"

5189
Batteries are essentials on Christmas morning. Your neighbors will appreciate this practical gift!
Tag idea: “Hope you have enough energy to make it through the holidays! Merry Christmas!”

5201
The best gifts are always simple, useful, and inexpensive. Try this easy idea: transparent tape. We all need it, especially at Christmastime. Decorate it or simply put the rhyme on it.

Here’s the poem that can be attached to it:

“Christmastime is often a rush,
With so much to do and no time to hush.
We hope this tape on the fridge in full sight,
Will keep you home from the store one more night!”
Cute, huh? But here’s what makes it ingenious: hot glue a magnet on the back so that it never gets lost because it’s on the refrigerator. We love this.
Our dollar store has the dispenser that is solid on the back so it’s easy to glue the magnet on. Dispensers with an open back wouldn’t work as well, so keep that in mind when you’re buying your tape.
We keep our tape on the side of the refrigerator all year and never have to scramble to find it. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

5199
We love giving this gift. Not only that, we’d love to receive this! This no-calorie gift is practical and fun to receive, and you can use any type of soap.

Tag idea: “We wash you a merry Christmas, we wash you a merry Christmas, we wash you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!”

5192
Attach to a bag of M&M’s a tag that says the following:

“As you hold these candies in your hand and turn them you will see,
The M become a W, an E, and then a 3.
They tell the Christmas story, it’s the one I’m sure you know.
It took place in a stable a long, long time ago.
The E is for the East, where the star shone so bright.
The M is for the manger where baby Jesus slept that night.
The 3 is for the Wise Men bearing gifts and so they came.
W is for worship—Hallelujah, praise His name.
So as you eat these candies, or share them with a friend,
Remember the meaning of Christmas . . . It’s a story that never ends.”

5195
Spread some love this season with holiday heart attacks!

You’ve probably seen paper “heart attacks” around Valentine’s Day, but why not show your neighbors some love at Christmas time? Make a bunch of Christmas-colored hearts with your family and write little notes to your neighbors on them. Then stick them on the front of their door for a fun holiday heart attack surprise!

5188
Do you often take the opportunity to tell your friends and neighbors how grateful you are and that you “take note” of how much they do for you? Christmas is the perfect occasion for gratitude and  recognition, and this is the perfect avenue.

Everyone can use a cute note pad. We got ours at a craft store for a dollar, and it has a magnet on the back (added plus). Remove the cellophane and personalize it by being the first one to leave a note for your friend.

5191
Christmas is always so busy, so why not take all the hard work you did in the summer and make Christmas a breeze? We took gallons of cherries and made them into Christmas gifts in July, so when the holidays arrived we were already prepared.

Tag idea: “Don’t let the season get you in a jam. We hope this helps keep your Christmas cherry and bright.”
If you’re feeling ambitious, take your jam with a loaf of bread or some rolls. Too busy for any of the homemade stuff? Buy the jam, decorate it, and you’re good to go!

5200
These are so great for cold toes after sledding or a snowball fight. You just pop them in the microwave for a couple minutes, put them on your cold toes or hands, and—aahh—instant warmth. They are also great for sore muscles.

Tag idea: “Stay warm and toasty this holiday season. Merry Christmas!”

To make: Sew a pouch, fill it with wheat or rice, and sew it closed. I used a washcloth for my material and added a ribbon embellishment, but you could use any fabric. (Be sure not to use ribbon with wire in it—for obvious reasons.)

5194
Clean and cover any type of can that has a lid (baby formula cans work great) with festive scrapbook paper or wrapping paper. Grab your favorite cookie recipe and start baking with your family.

Fill your Christmas cookie cans (to the brim please!) and deliver to smiling neighbors and friends.

5196
Dinnertime is crazy, especially during the holidays. Relieve your neighbors one night by ‘making’ them dinner: a frozen meal. If you have enough time, you can make a day of it and make a lot of frozen dinners . . . or just buy some. Either way, you can feel good knowing you’ve helped out your neighbor for one night.

Tag idea: “‘What’s for dinner?’ During the holidays we hear this a lot; just heat this [lasagna] until it is hot!”

5202
Attach Christmas tags and bows to a roll of wrapping paper and you have an easy neighbor Christmas gift you know they can use.

Tag idea: “Wrap yourself up in a wonderful holiday season.”

We hope these gift-giving ideas make your Christmas season a little simpler, and hopefully you make some sweet family memories.

Gift Idea - Christmas Pillow

Decorate a pillow case and give as a gift with the following poem.  Click HERE for the link.

December the first starts a magical time,

With all sorts of colors, ribbons, and rhyme...

Sugar plum fairies will dance in your head....

If you put this special pillowcase on your bed.

The reason its special, as you will soon see

Is that it's been dusted with Christmas Fancy!

Visions of candy canes, Santa and treasures

Will fill each dream with sweetness and pleasures.

When the time comes for it to be washed

Do it quickly so no magic is lost.

First Christmas Gift Wrap

My friend's cousin has created a line of gift wrap products that celebrate the Christ in Christmas.  I love this idea and her products are beautiful.  Click HERE if you're interested.

On the site, people can also click on their Christmas Blog (Keep Christ in Christmas - the blog) to find and share Nativity crafts, traditions, and other ideas.  I am a huge collector of Nativities and love displaying them in my home during the holidays.  I even keep 3-4 of my favorite ones displayed all year in a cabinet in my living room.  After all, Christ is the center of my life all year long so why not keep a symbol of His birth out all year long too, right?

There are two things that will soon be posted on her blog that will be going on during November that sound interesting...

1) They are collecting photos of homemade Nativities/manger scenes to display on the blog.

2) They will be running a children's Nativity Art Contest from November 4-18th.  She already displays children's Nativity drawings on her site, but she will be selecting some children's artwork to use in the wrap or on gift tags in 2012.

Fun Party Games

We just went to a fun Christmas party tonight. Here are some of the fun group games that we played.

- Gift Game: Have everyone sit in a circle. Place a wrapped gift in the middle of the room on a table. Have two box lids with 2 dice each in them. Pass the boxes around the circle and take turns rolling. If you get doubles you get to try opening the gift. The trick is that you have to put on a hat, a scarf and oven mitts and then trying opening the gift box. Our hostess had the actual had a big box and in that a smaller wrapped box, etc. The actual prize was very small. The boxes were each wrapped and taped really well. As soon as the next person rolls doubles they get to be the one to try opening the gift (and wearing all the garb). The person who actually gets to the prize gets to keep it.

- Name that Tune: Our hostess had around 30 different TV show and cartoon theme songs on a CD. We played name that tune (2 teams). The team got to hear around 3-5 seconds of the song and then had to guess the show. If they got the answer they got 2 points. If not, the other team could guess and get one point. It was very fun and hard.

- Song Game: We divided into two teams. The hostess gave us a word and we had to come up with a song that had that word in it. Then the other team had to sing a different song with that same word. It kept going until one of the teams couldn't come up with a song. We did Christmas words - star, red, night, etc. Very fun.

- Candy Bar Game: Everyone sat in a circle and had a brown lunch bag. They put a pile of different candy bars on the ground in the middle of the circle. They passed two boxes around with 2 dice in each box and when you rolled doubles you could go grab a candy bar and stick it in your bag. When another person got doubles they had the option taking a candy off of the ground or stealing your candy bar out of your bag. The clincher was that they had to remember which candy bar you had hidden in your bad and then ask you for that specific candy. There was a 5 minute time limit on the game.

- White Elephant Exchange: A classic Christmas game. Everyone brings a gift and is assigned a number. You go in order. The first person picks a gift and opens it. The next person can either pick an unwrapped gift or steal the first person's gift, etc. A gift can be stolen twice and then it is frozen and can't be taken again. Whoever went first gets to pick whatever gift they want (with the exception of the "frozen" gifts). We had funny gifts such as a personalized toilet seat, viagra, pregnancy test, chia pet, an actual white elephant, a sock monkey toy, bling-bling grill for your teeth, etc. We lucked out and got some charcoal and wood chips for our BBQ. There were also gifts like DVD's, candy, toys, games, candles, etc.

Hope you these ideas are helpful in your party plans!

Love and Logic Parenting - Gift of Giving

While at the bank a mother overheard the manager talking about a project his staff was involved in. They were collecting gifts for children in the community who, without their help, would not receive anything. So far they were not doing too well. The mother asked what she could do to help.

At dinner she told her family about the project. With pure excitement her kids said that since they had outgrown their bikes, and were hoping for new ones from Santa, they could give their old bikes to these children. That weekend the kids spent hours cleaning their bikes. By the time they were done, those bikes sparkled. They delivered the bikes Monday and the look of pure joy on her children's faces made Mom's heart swell.

That day they gave her a gift, too: the knowledge that she was raising kids who cared. The holidays are a good time to remind your kids that character is more about giving than receiving.

Bird's Nest Christmas Gift

http://just-because-i-am-me.blogspot.com/2008/09/family-frame-and-birds-nest.html

Here is a cute Christmas craft I found on Tip Junkie.....

Just go to your local craft store and buy some Spanish moss and some little bird's eggs. They are together in the same aisle. Take a large handful of the Spanish moss and break it away from the rest. Shape that amount into a bird's nest with your hands, tucking in any loose pieces, and making an indentation in the center so it looks like a nest.Next, use your hot glue gun to glue three little eggs in the nest. Print out this saying on your computer and tear around the edges to make it look old. Ink the edges, or burn the edges with fire.

An Old Christmas Legend
Long ago, great happiness and good fortune came to those who chose a Christmas tree with a bird's nest in its branches.  Here is a little nest for your Christmas tree.  May the legend come true for you.

Tuck your paper in the bird's nest and voila! You've got a cute little ornament to place in the crook of your Christmas tree. I give these out as gifts, and to present that, I place the bird's nest in a clear gift bag (also found at the craft store in the bag and tissue paper section) and tie it with a ribbon.
