Website - Fight the New Drug, Educating on the Harmful Effects of Pornography

I learned about this great website from a friend on Facebook.  Looks like a great one!  I am a big believer in the damage and chaos that come from pornography and have seen it destroy individuals, marriages, and families.  I applaud this group for fighting the good fight and helping people overcome the destructive affects of this "new drug."  Almost every family I know has been affected by pornography addiction in some way.  They say there is a Pornography Pandemic but people are afraid to discuss this "taboo" topic.  Let's expose this problem and fight it face on.

Here's the pledge that people can sign on their website:

"Now is the time for me to stand and help others overcome that which has affected my family, my friends and my community.  I will avoid exposure to this powerful drug called pornography.  I will be a source of strength to those who need support and accept help when I am in need.  I will be a voice of reason among the clatter of self serving opinion.  Too many have suffered.  Too many have sacrificed.  I must be open about a topic no one wants to discuss."

If you are addicted to pornography or have a loved one who is struggling, there is hope.

Combating Pornography

Here is a great website called "Combating Pornography" that is helpful to anyone dealing with pornography problems. There is info for individuals, spouses, parents, youth and leaders. Most families struggle with this either in their nuclear or extended family.

Pornography is a huge problem in our society and I am grateful for resources to help us combat it!

Click here to read the an awesome talk by Jeffrey Holland. We read that talk with our children tonight as a family and it was very sobering. It resulted in a very meaningful conversation.

Later at night, my teenage son came down and asked me to block the internet on his Ipod Touch so that he wouldn't be tempted to look at pornography now that he realized how serious Satan is about tricking us and getting people addicted to pornography. I was so happy he made that choice. As he walked away from me, he said, "Thanks for inspiring me mom."

I am so grateful that we were able to read and discuss that talk with our three sons and that they listened to our strong testimonies on this subject. I am grateful Elder Holland gave the powerful talk (I just love his direct attitude). And I am grateful for the Atonement that helps us overcome sin and sadness. Our Savior and Heavenly Father will always be stronger and smarter than Satan but Satan is sure trying his darnedest to sabotage mankind. Luckily Satan uses the same old stupid tricks so once you're on to his devious plans, it is easy to avoid his snares.

Hope this website is helpful to your family too.

Pornography and Internet Safety

The following information is taken from http://www.lds.org/.

Pornography and Internet Safety:

Parents can do many things to safeguard their homes from the harmful influences found on the Internet. While there is no foolproof system, some simple steps can help reduce the risk of family members seeing pornographic materials on the Internet.

1) Place computers in high-traffic areas of the home. Kitchens, family rooms, and studies usually have the most traffic. Because these rooms usually don’t have doors, they are typically less secluded than bedrooms. Position computer monitors so the screen faces out for public view.

2) Install a filtering program, and learn its features and how to use it. Good filtering programs allow you to view a history of which sites (including chat rooms) have been visited and when, as well as a record of incoming and outgoing e-mails. Information on filtering programs can be found on Internet sites such as http://www.internetfilterreview.com/.

3) Teach family members about the dangers of Internet pornography, including how to escape if an inappropriate site is accidentally accessed. This usually involves shutting down the entire system.

4) Teach family members to tell parents if they encounter any form of pornography while on the computer. This will help reduce the fear or shame of accidental exposure. It also serves to open discussion about the dangers of pornography.

5) Teach family members to use the Internet for a specific purpose only. Aimless surfing makes it easier to wander onto inappropriate sites.

6) Instant messaging is a cost-effective, easy way to communicate with family and close friends. However, teach family members to avoid public chat rooms, bulletin boards, or unfamiliar areas on the Internet. Such places present an unnecessary risk for children and adults.

7) Teach children not to share any personal information online without parental knowledge and permission. Many predators pose as children to gain access and information that may put children at risk.

8) Educate yourself about your computer and how the Internet works.

9) Be aware of what your children’s school and public library policies are regarding Internet use and accessibility.

10) Teach family members to never open e-mail from someone they don’t know.

The Internet is a wonderful tool and resource for families, but caution must be exercised in order to protect families and individuals from the potential dangers that are present online.
